Trivia
Here are a few interesting facts that you may not have known about the
show:
- Murray Greshler did not have a last name in the movie. His last
name from the show came from Abbey Greshler, who was both Tony Randall's
and Jack Klugman's agent.
- Elinore Donahue, who played Miriam Welby, previously co-starred
on "Father Knows Best," where Robert Young played her father. Miram's
last name was taken from "Marcus Welby, M.D.", the show that Young starred
in during The Odd Couple's run.
- Felix's children on the show, Leonard and Edna, were named after
Tony Randall (who's real name is Leonard) and his sister, Edna.
- Garry Marshall wrote the show's opening monologue, which begins,
"On November 13th, Felix Unger was asked to remove himself from his place
of residence." Marshall's birthday is November 13th.
- Excerpt from Tony Randall's book, Which Reminds Me: "In
the show's opening credits you can see me walking up Fifth Avenue as Felix
with two suitcases, on my way to Oscar's. The bags are awfully heavy and
I put them down on the sidewalk and sit. A guy who was passing stopped
and tried to help me with the bags. 'Hey, are you okay, buddy?' He didn't
know who I was, or that we were filming. He just wanted to help me. He
nearly ruined the take. Ordinarily you can drop dead on the streets of
New York and no one's going to help you. We kept it in the main titles."
